Passion, angst, beauty and joy. All these emotions and more were shared by photographers from around the world in the 2013 VOA Photo Contest.
But it was images from Bangladesh that won the hearts and eyes of judges. In fact, entries from Dhaka took first, second and seventh place in a competition that saw more than 4,500 entries from 110 countries.
Top honors went to Raihan Parvez from Dhaka for his black and white portrait of an older women protecting her grain from three hungry ducklings.
A lighted-hearted take on the theme of man against nature, the stand-off is more heart-wrenching when one understands the bleak reality of a struggle for life for villagers in an area used to rising sea levels, failed crops and devastating cyclones.
By winning this year’s contest, Parvez will receive an Apple iPad with Retina Display.
Also from Dhaka, photographer Saud A Faisal’s depiction of family life in the poisonous rubble of the city’s leather industry won second prize.
